Universities in the Kurdistan region move ahead

The Kurdistan Regional Government is moving ahead with two new university campuses in the Sulaimani area. The most advanced project, which is now almost a third complete, is the new Sulaimani University Campus in the Qilyasan district. A joint venture between Federal Development & Contracting Company (FDC) based in Sulaimani and Tepe Construction of Turkey is responsible for the design and construction works. The JV was awarded the six year contract for the new campus in 2005. The estimated $260 million project has a building floor area of some 360,000 sq m. The whole site is much bigger and includes 24 buildings, sports facilities, roads, utilities, water and sewage treatment, landscaping and other infrastructure. The new campus will cater for 20,000 students when complete. The photograph below shows, from right to left, the Fine Arts building, the Computer Engineering building and the Engineering building, which form part of the first phase of the project.

The same JV has also completed the Master Plan for the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUI-S). This is located adjacent to the new Sulaimani University Campus in the same district. The first phase of construction has recently commenced on this site based upon the funding secured to date.

The First Lady of Iraq, Mrs. Talabani, visited the Sulaimani University Campus recently. The First Lady is a great patron of educational projects in the Kurdistan Region and in particular elementary and secondary schools. She currently sponsors one of Iraq’s schools for talented pupils.
